It’s crazy to think that around this time last year I just got a job at A dealership as their digital media manager. While a lot of people see me as the “Facebook guy” (a term I despise) it’s so not just only that. Social media is just where I display my work. Video, pictures, copy, marketing campaigns etc is the stuff dreams are made of - well at least my dreams anyway.
I always considered myself an ok photographer / videographer but the more I do it, the more apparent 2 recurring principles become.
1: Everyone in your profession is not necessarily a “professional”. You will be surprised How many people don’t know heads or tails of their own equipment or industry. I would never be so bold as to imply that I do but I certainly don’t go around faking it to make it. I have met some really good photographers in my stint here in Wichita Falls who have WAY MORE experience and skill than I do. Not to mention more equipment. I have not reached their level to even consider myself a serious photographer; just call me the local “picture-takeouter”. I have learnt to be extremely humble and I appreciate that.
2: The race is not given to the swift but those that can endure. In context it means that sometimes the person who gets the job or makes the money is not necessarily the most qualified (which is pretty messed up on its own) but the one that puts forth the most effort. I have gotten contracts from bands to be their official photographer at shows, references from people and organizations that I have helped in the past and compliments on my work. The same work I beat myself over for not being of the quality I need it to be at. But I guess that’s just me being hard on myself.
So when ever you decide to go for your goal-what ever industry it is-keep at it because you are well on your way to success, you just don’t know it yet. Take a step back sometimes and admire your accomplishments. This reminds me of the sankofa bird and what it means: looking back at the past while moving forward.
As always, remember that even thought you cannot save the world you can certainly affect your corner of it. Keep chasing your dreams!!
